Upgrading SQL Server VDBs

This topic describes how to upgrade a SQL Server VDB to a higher version of SQL Server instance.

Procedure for VDB in-place upgrade

  1. Remove any VDB Refresh Policy assigned to the VDB.

  2. Upgrade the target SQL Server instance.

  3. Refresh the target environment.

    Optionally, disable the VDB’s SnapSync and Refresh policy before refreshing the environment, and keep it disabled until Delphix discovers the new version of SQL Server and updates its repository. If policies are not disabled and a SnapSync or Refresh runs before Delphix discovers the new version, an error will be returned such as: The virtual database XYZ was upgraded. Upgrade the virtual database on the Delphix Engine to continue sync operations.

  4. Reassign the VDB Refresh Policy to the VDB.

Procedure to upgrade a VDB to a new SQL instance

  1. Refresh all environments.

  2. Log in to the Delphix Management application.

  3. Click Manage.

  4. Select Datasets.

  5. Select the VDB to be upgraded.

  6. From the Actions menu (...) select Disable.

  7. Click Disable to confirm.

  8. From the Actions menu (...) select upgrade. The Upgrade Database window will open.

  9. Select the SQL Server instance to which you want the VDB to upgrade.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Enable the VDB. See Enabling and disabling the SQL Server AG virtual database.

  12. Repeat steps 5 to 12 for each VDB you want to upgrade.
