Resolve upgrade checks
Overview
When verifying an upgrade, the verification job can sometimes detect particular action items called upgrade checks. These checks are items that the Delphix Engine is not capable of fixing on its own, and require customer and/or Delphix support action. Every upgrade check that appears must be resolved or ignored before the upgrade can proceed, with the exception of INFORMATIONAL checks which require no action by users. Below is a workflow for various severity types and upgrade check action.
Upgrade severities checks
|
Severity |
Description |
|---|---|
|
CRITICAL |
These checks indicate a potential problem post-upgrade with the Delphix Engine. The Delphix Engine cannot be upgraded while CRITICAL checks are present; it is likely that the engine will fail to upgrade or break catastrophically post-upgrade. |
|
WARNING |
These checks indicate problems that are local to some objects on the Delphix Engine, but the overall engine can continue running. For example, WARNING checks may indicate a problem with the configuration of a particular Windows environment and indicate that if an upgrade occurs, that environment will not function properly. |
|
INFORMATIONAL |
These checks provide important information about your upgrade but do not require immediate action. |
Resolve every CRITICAL result before upgrading. For WARNING results, take corrective action and mark the result resolved, or mark it ignored if you accept the associated limitations. INFORMATIONAL results do not require action.
The following are examples of upgrade checks that the Delphix Engine can report:
-
OS tunable settings (CRITICAL) - Upgrade verification checks that only a certain set of operating system tunables have been adjusted. If tunable settings not on this acceptable list have been changed, please contact Delphix support.
-
Hotfix (CRITICAL) - Upgrade verification checks whether hotfixes applied to the Delphix Engine are included in the target version. If a hotfix is missing, the check generates a CRITICAL result. Contact Delphix Support to address the result before upgrading.
-
Snapshot directory visible (CRITICAL) - This is an internal Delphix Engine problem that Delphix support can resolve for our customers.
-
Replication (WARNING) - It indicates that your Delphix Engine has replication set up as either a target or source. Delphix Engines can only perform replication to engines on the same version or higher, so it is recommended to upgrade all Engines in a Replication configuration at the same time, depending on the requirements. For more information on forward-compatible replication, refer toReplication overview.
-
Storage available (WARNING) - Upgrade verification checks that there is sufficient space to perform data operations.
-
SSL/TLS configuration (WARNING) - Upgrade verification checks that the security configuration of the engine is up to date and properly configured.
-
Verify if Delphix Self-Service (Jet Stream) feature is in use (WARNING) - This warning indicates that the Delphix Engine still contains legacy Delphix Self-Service (Jet Stream) metadata from earlier use. This warning can appear during upgrade verification even after Self-Service has reached end of life. After you complete any required migration or cleanup actions, click Mark Resolved. If you acknowledge the warning and choose to continue with the upgrade, click Mark Ignored.
An Upgrade check can result in multiple check results. Check results are essentially a to-do list of action items required before performing an upgrade. For example, the OS Tunables will create one line item in the UI for each present tunable that is not on our acceptable list. There are two actions that can be performed on each check result.
Upgrade check actions
|
Action |
Description |
|---|---|
|
Mark Resolved |
Click Mark Resolved after you take the action needed to address the check result. The next verification run repeats the check. If the issue remains, the result appears again. If the issue is fixed, no new result is generated and the check does not interrupt the upgrade. Clicking Verify Upgrade or Apply Upgrade runs the checks associated with resolved results again. |
|
Mark Ignored |
Click Mark Ignored when you do not plan to address the check result. If only ignored and INFORMATIONAL results remain, verification does not run again automatically unless more than one hour passes before you apply the upgrade. Future verification runs do not generate ignored results again. You cannot ignore CRITICAL check results. |
For the Verify if Delphix Self-Service (Jet Stream) feature is in use warning, click Mark Resolved after you complete any required migration or cleanup actions. Click Mark Ignored when you acknowledge the warning and choose to continue with the upgrade. Ignoring this warning allows the upgrade to proceed, but you accept any limitations related to legacy Self-Service data.
Examples of upgrade check actions
Case A: Verification results from critical severity check
Consider a case where Delphix Engine previously had a few hotfixes installed by Delphix Support to resolve an issue.
During verification, a CRITICAL result appears if one or more hotfixes applied to the engine are not included in the target version. Continuing could remove the fixes and cause the issue they addressed to recur.
Contact Delphix Support or choose a target version that includes the required fixes. After you address the issue, click Mark Resolved and run verification again.
Case B: Verification results warning severity check with ignore all warnings
Consider a case where Delphix Engine is configured as a Delphix Replication source for another Delphix Engine.
During the upgrade process, a warning message appears because the target engine is on a version that is incompatible with the source engine version.
Hence replication is interrupted until the target engine is upgraded to a newer version.
Resolve the replication compatibility issue and click Mark Resolved, or click Mark Ignored if you accept the replication interruption and associated limitations.
-
For each WARNING result, take corrective action and click Mark Resolved, or click Mark Ignored if you accept its consequences.
-
You can also click Ignore All Warnings to disregard all warning messages at once.
Case C: Verification steps upgrade failure
Click Verification Steps to view the actions performed, their status, descriptions, and duration. A FAIL status means verification generated a result. Open Verification Results to review its severity and description. A failed step can correspond to CRITICAL, WARNING, or INFORMATIONAL severity.
